The network is also being expanded to include international and other U.S. institutions which will be part of COIL's newly named Global Network. In the COIL model, students from different cultures enroll in shared courses with faculty members from each country co-teaching and managing coursework. The COIL model as a cost-effective, accessible, and scalable method for delivering global learning and intercultural experience to greater numbers of U.S. students, particularly the 90% of U.S. undergraduates who do not participate in education abroad. The SUNY COIL Center model emphasizes experiential learning by embedding cross-cultural experiences directly into existing curricula at many SUNY campuses. We believe that an inter-institutional organization must emerge for the COIL modality to become widely adopted in the field.
