In the COIL model, students from different cultures enroll in shared courses with faculty members from each country co-teaching and managing coursework. The COIL model as a cost-effective, accessible, and scalable method for delivering global learning and intercultural experience to greater numbers of U.S. students, particularly the 90% of U.S. undergraduates who do not participate in education abroad. The SUNY COIL Center model emphasizes experiential learning by embedding cross-cultural experiences directly into existing curricula at many SUNY campuses. We believe that an inter-institutional organization must emerge for the COIL modality to become widely adopted in the field.
